Frequently Asked Questions

Are you a homeopath or Chinese herbalist?

No, although we all use herbs- homeopaths and Chinese herbalists also use minerals and some animal products. Homeopaths dilute the medicine down whereas herbalists use the whole herb extracted in alcohol. Chinese herbalists diagnose illnesses according to the Chinese interpretation of physiology and offer acupuncture as part of the treatment.

‘All herbs are safe – aren’t they?’

Unfortunately, it is a common misconception that because a herb is a natural plant, it must be safe. Safety often depends on dosage and the constitution of the person. Some of the most effective herbs can be dangerous and thus it is important to consult someone who has been trained to use herbs within safe limits.

What type of conditions do you treat?

All sorts – but particularly chronic types of diseases in which the patients are not satisfied with their treatment by orthodox medicine e.g. IBS, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, gastric reflux, ME, asthma, hay fever, chest infections, skin problems like eczema and psoriasis, insomnia, stress, PMS, infertility, menopausal symptoms, prostate and heart conditions. Herbs can also be used as an adjunct treatment after chemotherapy.

Can you treat patients on orthodox medications?

Yes, I have been trained to prescribe alongside orthodox medicines and avoid any herbs that may be contra-indicated. Herbal medicine can also assist with alleviating some of the symptoms caused by side effects of some orthodox medicines. I will monitor a patient’s progress and will refer them back to their doctor, a specialist or another therapist when necessary.

Why should I pay to see you rather than go to my local Health Food shop?

You are paying for expert knowledge and skill, a thorough consultation, possible diagnosis, a treatment plan and a tailor-made prescription to treat not only the symptoms but preferably the cause of the condition. The herbal prescription will almost definitely be cheaper than you buying your own herbs and may contain herbs that you are not legally able to buy yourself and that come from organic, reliable and sustainable sources. Self-prescribing is not recommended since it can at best work but be relatively expensive, or it may prove to be ineffective or at worst it may contra-indicate with other medications or supplements that you are on and cause adverse effects.
